A Writer's Welcome

A Writer's Welcome Laara Waas

Hi, everyone!

Since this is my first post, I thought it’d be nice to share a bit about myself. I’m a fiction writer living in New York City, where I’m currently pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing at Columbia University.

When I’m not lost in a book or typing away, I love to stay active. I aim to run a marathon every year—it really helps clear my mind and gives me a sense of accomplishment (which, as any writer will know, writers don’t get very often). Plus, it’s a great way to explore cities! I also have this goal of visiting every country in the world. So far, I’ve made it to 48, and I’m pretty much always planning my next trip.

As for my writing influences, I’ve been shaped by so many incredible authors, but Kazuo Ishiguro and Sylvia Plath have really made an impact on me. Their sparse prose and introspective narrators have inspired much of my own writing. And speaking of inspiration, The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera is my all-time favorite novel. It combines history, philosophy, politics and literature in a way that’s both captivating and challenging. A true “literary firework,” as it says on the back cover of the German translation.

I try to write every morning, right after I wake up. I like my mind to be clear of all the day-to-day clutter. I don’t go on social media or even check my text messages and e-mails. So if you don’t hear from me in the morning, it’s likely because I’m at my desk, sipping on a cup of tea—usually chamomile, peppermint, or peach—lost in my writing.

If I could be any fictional character, I’d probably choose Satoru Nakata from Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore. He can talk to cats, and as a total cat lover, that kinda sounds like a dream come true. Or, if that’s not an option, Yennefer of Vengerberg (The Witcher series) for obvious reasons.

So yeah, that’s a little sneak peek into my life. I’m excited to share more about my writing journey and chat about the books and stories that inspire us all. Thanks for being here with me!

Talk to you soon—

Lara
